My Creative Space

The anticipated delivery of Linen blend fabric arrived today.  I think Aussie Post enjoyed a long weekend!

Purchased from Fresh Fabrics Australia on Etsy, it is unbleached linen/cotton blend (45% cotton, 55% linen) often used as a base cloth for hand printed designs.  It is a medium weight fabric which I do intend to incorporate into more of my quilts.

The mere mention of linen also sent a flurry of emails my way asking just where I purchase the linen fabric that I have used for quite a few of my quilts.

I don't often use pure linen as it is more difficult to sew with,  is expensive, and great care needs to be taken when washing linen.   A linen/cotton blend fabric is much more friendly to work with, and having pre-washed all of the linen blend fabrics in my stash, I am happy with how they have machine washed, line dried and ironed.  This linen is often known as Handkerchief Linen.

My local store for linen blend fabric is GJ Discount Fabrics in Brunswick.  They generally stock solid linen blend fabric in White, Birch, Chocolate, Hessian, and Red.  The ladies there are more than happy to take phone orders, and have been known to send the linen blend overseas, for more info email:  georgiagjs@bigpond.com

Linen and Linen Blends can also be found online in Australia at:
  • Duckcloth - 100 per cent linen in a range of naturals and colors
and of course,

Online outside of Australia I have purchased Robert Kaufman Essex Linen.  This is at times available on Etsy.com (search for Essex linen) more often at:
The non-delivery of the expected parcel yesterday forced me to re-think the use of linen blend fabric in my current project.  The quilt that I am making is quite large (for my standards), and the use of linen in a large quilt, makes for a much heavier quilt.

And so I found myself surrounded by my stash of solid fabrics and it wasn't long before the Kona Cotton Solid in Ash was put to good use. In terms of color Kona Cotton Ash is quite a good substitute for a linen fabric, maybe a little more grey than expected.

I have finished the rotary cutting and have enjoyed some chain piecing with more to come.

Thank you for all your comments and emails.  I do hope that some of the information here may be helpful.

  5. I have never sewn with linen, although I love the look of it. I'll have to add it to my list of things I'd like to try (although that list is pretty long!)

    Thanks for the info.

  6. Hi Rita
Another gorgeous selection of colour and pattern - thanks for the tips on new suppliers.
I agree with your choice of grey cotton - I am using it in my Double Wedding Ring to contrast pink and red Liberty and spots - it brings me joy at each little stitching session!!

  7. Birch forest in GREEN? Oh my! Thanks for all that information - I've been wanting to use a linen blend in my quilts for some time but had no idea where to get it, as I&S had sold out of it. Of course, I should have just asked you where you got yours!

  8. Great post! Love to hear how you are using your fabric. Essex is the fabric that I also carry at $5.75 per yard. Four more bolts coming in next week. It is a very nice product and is machine washable. It is definitely suitable for use in any quilting project.

  9. Ahhhh...you turned me on to Kona cotton in Ash....I am now so in love with anything grey!:)

I also found a Kona that looks a lot like your Hessian...it's a little tan right?

I really need to splurge and buy myself a Kona sample card set!!:)

So looking forward to see you being green!:)

  13. Hi Rita,

I'm so happy to have a question for you because it gives me a chance to tell how much I enjoy visiting your blog! I've found your posts to be so inspiring! I was curious about how you press your seams when you do your piecing (especially those half square triangles!) I always press from the back toward the direction of the lighter color (unless I'm more concerned with easing the seams together) but I always manage to stretch the fabric out of shape no matter how careful I am! Do you have any tips to share? Thank you!

  15. Very helpful. You know, it didn't occur to me that you used greys mostly... I always use white. Maybe I should try a grey to change things up a bit.

  16. I also have a question. I haven't worked with a linen cotton blend before, but I have bought some and am wanting to use it in a project with batiks. Do you think this will work ok? And do you have any tips about working with a cotton linen blend? Thanks so much!

  17. So lovely of you to share your linen secrets. My favourite is Amber at Fresh Fabrics, as you say the linen is so nice to work with. I didn't know GJ's had it, will have a look next time I'm in the area.

    Thanks and love your stuff!

  18. We had a great store that sold specialty fabrics, but like a lot of the best ones, they closed down.

  19. Awesome post. I think Kathy at Pink Chalk also carries linen this side. I just finished up a pillow with linen and though I was so happy with it some words were spoken.

I am a huge fan of Carolina Chambray in natural. Any of the Chambrays offer great texture and are super vivid.
