Log Cabin - Quilting

My sewing machine has gone into heavy duty use and is still quilting. This time it is the Gelati Log Cabin Quilt. This quilt top was professionally basted by a long arm machine quilter as it is quite a large top with a lot of seams. This is what a basted quilt looks like when it returns from the quilter:

You can just quilt over these basting lines. Once all the quilting is finished you can remove these big basting stitches quite quickly and easily.

I really do like the look of straight line quilting stitches, so that is what I have done on this quilt. First I quilted all the diagonal lines and then I outlined the sashing in between the blocks.

I also tried out a new thread. I normally like to use Gutermann 100% cotton thread for all my piecing and quilting, but this time I used Aurifil Mako thread in 40/2 weight. It is also 100% cotton but has quite a nice sheen to it. It does make for a lovely stitch, and I was also impressed with its strength.

I am now going to try and find some fabric for the binding. I find that getting the binding right can sometimes be the hardest part!

I hope to post the finished quilt soon and that you too get to do some sewing today!

  1. Oh it is so beautiful!!

I really like the lines too!

I'm going to sew after Connor goes to bed! I think there is a reason little boys go to bed so early!

  2. It looks great! I love the look of the straight lines.

How do you quilt around the thread that the quilt is basted with?

  4. I too wondered about quilting around the machine-basting........whether it was difficult to remove after being stitched over. You've done a beautiful job and I really enjoy checking out your blog.

  5. Thanks for all your lovely comments! I have updated this post with some more info on basting stitches. You can just sew straight over them, and once all quilting is complete they need to be unpicked. They pull out quite quickly as they are such large stitches. It sure beats basting such a large quilt myself!
    Thanks

  9. I'd never thought of having a quilt sent out to be basted, but it might be a good solution. I have a large twin quilt top finished, but I simply don't have the flat space to lay it out.

The binding is almost always the last thing I figure out too.

  12. It's gorgeous! Thanks for the info about getting it machine basted, I have a quilt in mind that I would like to be machine basted and then I will hand quilt it. At one place I was quoted the same cost to baste as to quilt...I'm curious if yours was a similar arrangement?

  13. Funny a lot of people don't think of us longarmers as able to baste, but it is a wonderful service. I have a few that like to have it done. But it is certainly not the majority. Your quilting is fabulous and as you know, I just love the quilt.

  16. It is a beautiful quilt. Thank you for the information about the basting. I have thought of having a long-arm quilter do it, but have not yet done so.

  19. I would love to have somebody baste for me! I love the colors of this quilt, and the white sashing really lets them shine. I also really liked the white square in the middle of your mini 9-patches yesterday. That is a really cool look.

    Love the quilting.
(And that basting is so good, one might be tempted to leave it in as the actual quilting!)
